The Original 1975 Finland Tour

The Original 1975 Finland Tour

After visiting Finland in 1973 & 1974 American runner Steve Prefontaine invited a group of nine Finnish track and field athletes to Oregon. The trip would later become known as the “Finland Tour”.

Several of the Finnish athletes alive today still fondly remember the hospitality of their American hosts. Some stayed in their homes, others in trailers like the Karhu Airstream®.

The Airstream® will travel the US starting in the summer of 2012; driven by both Finnish and American collegiate runners, promoting the spirit of Finnish American friendship and our mutual love for the sport.

In the 1975 images our Finnish friends can be seen at Oregon’s Hayward Field; commonly revered as the birthplace of Nike. In front of them you can see an orange Karhu “Champion” model — the very first running shoe to feature an “Air Cushion”. Karhu registered “Karhu Air Cushion” in 1976. Nike registered “Air” in 1977. Hey, we sold Adidas its 3-stripe logo for a song. In the interest of fairness, why not help Nike out, too

Karhu is now accepting applications from U.S. and Finnish runners seeking to co-pilot this Airstream® on an epic 4,000-mile trip across America from September through November 2012.

You will be living in this converted Airstream® for three months, have all your road race entries paid for and visit events and retailers along the way. Call it your internship or just an excuse to keep running. Applicants with no Sisu spirit need not apply.
